You can always research any competitor's site instantly in Research, but for the most in-depth and ongoing benchmarking, you'll want to add competitors to a campaign.
There are two options for adding competitors to a campaign:
Competitor Settings: Add any competitors by entering sites in a list or upload using a template
Competitor Discovery: See the top 50 sites ranking for each search engine and keyword segment. Click to add any of the sites as a competitor.
You can add any root domain, subdomain, subfolder, or URL as a competitor in Competitor Settings.
Navigate to Competitor Settings which can be found under Campaign Settings in the left navigation.
Click Quick Add to add competitors one per line, or Upload From File to add competitors by uploading a template file.
Type or paste in competitor sites, keeping in mind the site scope of each. Click Add competitors when done.
After entering competitors (one per line), you'll then see the competitors showing in the table. Before you make any changes to their site scope, it will try to automatically detect the scope and set it for each competitor.
If you'd update the scope, use the dropdown for each competitor under the Scope column.
Click on the dropdown to select a site scope for a competitor site.
Upload From File
If you choose to import competitors by file, you'll first need to download the template.
In the template, you can enter the competitors' sites and site scope in each row,
Under Scope, you can set root domain, subdomain / subfolder, exact URL, or root domain only for each competitor site (case-insensitive).
Note: The “Scope” field is optional. If omitted, it will try to automatically detect scope and set it for each entered site.
After completing the template, click Upload competitors and upload the completed template.
The competitors' sites with their site scope will be added to the table. You can now check and update the site scope for each site.
Competitor Discovery is a great way to see who your actual organic competitors are.
While most organizations know who their competitors are in the general marketplace, the competitors for organic traffic on their targeted keywords may be totally different. These competitors may be tough to find manually, but that's where Competitor Discovery comes in. This report shows the top ranking 50 domains for every search engine and tag combination in the campaign.
To add a competitor in Competitor Discovery to a campaign, simply click the grey "-" icon in the Tracked column.
The icon will change to a green check.
The competitor is now tracking in the campaign.
