What is a campaign?

Some tools and reports in Dragon Metrics (such as Research) work independently, with no setup required. Other reports are a part of a Campaign, which is a collection of tools and reports that will track a single website and its competitors over time.

For brands, each campaign is typically a website that you own or maintain. Globally-focused brands may have a separate campaign for each country site. For agencies, each campaign is typically a client website.

Create a new campaign

To create a new campaign, choose +add new campaign from the dropdown on the top of every campaign report.

You can also click the + button on Campaigns under Account Settings in the left navigation.

A setup guide will help walk you through each of the steps.

Campaign Settings

The first step is to choose a name for the campaign and enter the website you wish to track.

A website can be an entire root domain, a subdomain, subfolder, a single URL, or a combination of subdomain and subfolders. How you enter the website defines which URLs should be included.

Advanced Setup

To use the default settings for site crawls and keyword limits, click Next. To modify any of these settings, check Advanced setup to reveal additional options.

Crawl settings (advanced setup)

You can customize how Dragon Metrics crawls your site, such as how many URLs are crawled, the speed of the crawler, starting URLs, and which parts of the site should be excluded from the crawl.

Keyword Limits (Advanced setup)

By default, all campaigns in an account share the same common pool of keyword credits on a first-come-first-served basis. Keyword Limits allow you to optionally allocate and reserve a portion of keyword credits for an individual campaign.

User Access

If there are multiple users in the account, it's possible to limit which team members have access to this campaign.

Connected accounts

You may optionally connect your Google Analytics or Google Search Console accounts to Dragon Metrics to unlock over 25 additional reports and supercharge others with session, conversion, revenue, and organic keyword data.

This step is optional, so if you wish to skip at this time, simply click the Next button to continue.

To connect a Google Analytics account, click Connect Account

You'll be asked to sign into your Google account. Log into the Google account that has access to the Google Analytics property you wish to integrate with this campaign.

This sign-in happens securely in a new window on google.com. Dragon Metrics will never see your password.

You'll be presented with a screen by Google asking if you are willing to share access to your Google Analytics account with Dragon Metrics. Click Allow if you agree.

You will then return to Dragon Metrics, where you can choose the Google Analytics account, property, and view you'd like to associate with this campaign. You also have the option of including or excluding ecommerce data. Click OK when you are done.

Follow the same procedure for connecting a Google Search Console account.

Search Engines

Next up is to select which search engines you'd like to track your keyword rankings on.

Dragon Metrics supports 11 search engines in over 200 country and language combinations and 100,000 locations at the city / postal code / neighborhood level. See all supported search engines and locations

Choose the desired search engine, country, language, and device.

Click Add Locations to focus on one or more specific cities or neighborhoods. Start typing the name of your location to bring up matching locations.

Click or press enter to add the location. You can continue adding more locations in the same way.

Click the + button to add additional search engines

There's no limit to the number of search engines you can track keywords on, but keep in mind that since keyword credits are consumed per SERP collected, each additional combination of search engine, region, language, device, and location will increase keyword credit usage.

Click the - button next to a search engine to remove it.

Track different search engines per keyword

By default, all keywords in a campaign will be tracking on the same set of search engines. This is suitable for most sites. For organizations that need to track different sets of search engines for different sites, simply create a different campaign for each site.

However, there may be situations when it may make sense to track different sets of keywords on different sets of search engines in the same campaign.

In this case, click Show advanced options at the bottom of the page and select Enable keyword-level search engine tracking.

With this setting enabled, you can choose which search engines to track individually for each keyword.

Skip rank tracking setup

If you do not want to set up rank tracking at this time, click Skip rank tracking setup. This will complete the campaign creation process.

Keywords

The next step is to add keywords to your campaign.

There are 4 options for adding keywords:

  • Quick Add - Type or paste keywords into a text box
  • Import from file - Download a template file, add keywords and upload
  • Import from Research - Add keywords you're already ranking for from Dragon Metrics database of over 400 million keywords.
  • Import from Google Search Console - Add keywords you're already ranking for from Google Search Console

Quick add

Simply type or paste the keywords you'd like to add in the text box, one-per line.

You may tag these keywords with one or more labels to segment and filter keywords in other reports by typing them into the Add tags area below.

When you are finished, click Add keywords.

The keywords have been added to the campaign, and you will now have the option to update other optional keyword fields.

Click on any field to update the information, and click Save Changes when you are finished. If you do not wish to add details at this time, click Close.

Import from file

If you have a long list of keywords or wish to include additional keyword details such as Tags, Preferred Landing Page, or Translation, we recommend adding keywords by file.

Choose the tab labeled Import from File and click the button to download the template.

Open the Excel template, remove the example keywords and add your own. The only required field is Keyword, others may be omitted. Learn more about optional keyword fields

When finished adding keywords, save the file, click Upload new keywords, and select the file.

Keywords will be added, and you will have a chance to look verify the import results. You can click any fields to make additional edits, or click Close to finish.

Import from Research

Ranking Research is powered by a database of over 400 million keyword rankings, and can be searched instantly. If you're not sure which keywords to track, Ranking Research may be a good place to discover keywords you're already ranking for.

While you can always visit this tool directly for much deeper analysis, the Import from Research option allows you to browse the top 1,000 keywords your site is ranking for to quickly add to your campaign.

To add the top keywords for your site, choose the Import top option and select the number of keywords you'd like to add.

Select Let me choose to browse the top 1,000 keywords for this site.

Check the box next to any keywords you'd like to add to the campaign, add any tags you'd like to apply to these keywords, and then click Add selected keywords when you're finished.

Import from Google Search Console

Google Search Console shows up to 50,000 keywords that are driving organic clicks and impressions to your site. If you've integrated your account with Dragon Metrics, you can import these keywords directly into a campaign.

Choose Import from Google Search Console

To add the top keywords for your site, choose the Import top option and select the number of keywords you'd like to add.

Choose Import all to add all keywords found in your Google Search Console account.

Select Let me choose to browse the top 50,000 keywords found in your Google Search Console account.

Check the box next to any keywords you'd like to add to the campaign, add any tags you'd like to apply to these keywords, and then click Add selected keywords when you're finished.

Competitors

The last step is to add competitors to your campaign by entering them into the text box, one-per-line.

You can add competitor sites as a root domain, subdomain, subfolder or a single URL. The same rules for site scope apply to competitors as well.

Competitors in Dragon Metrics do not need to be actual competitors. They can be any site you wish to compare performance with. For example, it may make sense to add specific subdomains / subfolders / country TLDs of your own site as competitors.

If you're not sure which competitor sites you'd like to track, you may leave it blank for now. Dragon Metrics has many tools for finding who your competitors are, and can be added at a later time.

We're done!

The campaign has now been created. Some reports are available immediately, while others may take some time to complete data collection.
