Dynamic Tags are an incredibly powerful way to quickly segment and filter keyword segments to compare sets of keywords to each other.

Whereas traditional (e.g. manual) tags are applied directly to keywords individually, Dynamic Tags are simply rules that you set up — any keywords that match this criteria will have these tags applied.

Once a Dynamic Tag is created, it works just like any other tag. You can now filter any ranking report by this tag, compare ranking performance of this tag to others segments in Tag Ranking, see monthly search volume trends for this set of keywords over time on Search Demand Trends, and more.

Every time ranking data is updated, the same filters for each dynamic tag will be applied. Any keyword that meets the criteria will have this tag added to it, while any keywords that do not meet the criteria will have it removed. This means your tags will always be kept up-to-date with the most recently available data.

Benefits of Dynamic Tags

Dynamic tags can save a tremendous amount of time, freeing you from having to tag keywords individually. For example, instead of going through your keywords and tagging each one that has your brand name, simply create a rule that applies the brand tag to any keyword that contains your brand name.

In addition to time-savings, dynamic tags unlock some truly powerful segmentation options that are unavailable to traditional tags. Want to compare your performance of keywords where the SERPs contain a local map pack to those that don’t? It’s just a couple of clicks away with dynamic tags.

Create a dynamic tag

To create a dynamic tag, navigate to Keywords under Ranking in the left navigation.

At the top of the page, select the filters you'd use and click Apply filter.

The Save filter as dynamic tag will be enabled after the filter is applied.

Click this button to enter a name for this dynamic tag.

Click OK to save.

Note: A dynamic tag cannot be created if the current filter already includes a dynamic tag, or “site” is set to anything but the campaign site.

Using the dynamic tag

Once set up, dynamic tags work exactly like manual tags, so you'll see it available in the tag dropdown, just like all the others.

For example, you can compare performance of each tag (dynamic or manual) in the Tag Ranking report, Search Demand Trends, or any other ranking report.

Managing Dynamic Tags

To view all the dynamic tags you've created, go to Dynamic Tags under Campaign Settings.

The criteria of each dynamic tag are listed on the right for you to review the setup.

Note: The criteria of dynamic tags cannot be edited. You will need to re-create another dynamic tag if you want to set up additional criteria.

Rename a Dynamic Tag

Click on the name of the dynamic tag to rename it.

Delete a Dynamic Tag

Click the X on the right of the tag to delete it.

Or select multiple tags and delete them at once.
