A conversion is the desired action that website owners would like visitors to take. For eCommerce sites, a conversion is typically a sale. However, conversions can be many different types of actions. Some common actions that function as conversions include:

  • Making a successful purchase
  • Submitting a contact form
  • Visiting a key page
  • Signing up for a newsletter or other service
  • Engaging in a live chat
  • Clicking on an advertisement
  • Spending a given amount of time on a page or site
  • Leaving a review

Conversions are often referred to interchangeably as goals, and much of online marketing is centered around strategies for increasing conversions.
