A snippet is the short piece of content found under the link of a page's search results on a SERP. The purpose of a snippet is to provide users a preview or summary of the content they can expect to find on the page.

Search engines will typically (but not always) utilize the page's meta description tag for the content found in the snippet. However, if the meta description is missing, overly long, or if search engines do not feel this the meta description effectively represents the user's query, they may generate their own snippet from content found on the page.
