De-indexation occurs when a search engine removes a previously indexed URL (or an entire site) from their index. There are several possible reasons why a page or site may be de-indexed:

  • The page no longer exists (the search engine encounter a 4xx error or sustained 5xx error)
  • The page has moved to a new location (the search engine encountered a 301 permanent redirect)
  • Search engines decide this page is a non-canonical duplicate page
  • Search engines feels that the page does not offer original or valuable content to users
  • The page has begun blocking crawlers using the robots.txt, meta robots, or x-robots tag
  • The page has been made inaccessible to crawlers by being placed behind a login or other
  • The site or the page has violated the search engine's webmaster guidelines and is being penalized as a result of webspam
