Cloaking is the practice of showing different content to search engines than what is shown to human visitors.

This practice is severely looked down on by search engines, and typically considered to be a black hat or webspam technique, since it is most often used to intentionally deceive search engines of the content that is available on the site in order to gain higher rankings.

However, there are some techniques or practices which a site can unintentionally show different content to search engines than to human visitors. These should be avoided so not to incur penalties from search engines.
