The competitor discovery tool helps you find who your main competitors are for organic rankings of tracked keywords and search engines.
This an incredibly useful tool, since it may not always be obvious who your competitors are. While it's likely you're aware of who your major competitors are in the market, your competitors in organic search are often drastically different.
Furthermore, if you have several different business units, or types of products and services, it's possible that each one of these have completely different competitors. The highest ranking competitors will also differ for each search engine as well.
Competitor Discovery takes all the guesswork out of it for you by automatically finding the top 50 ranking domains for each keyword group and search engine.
How competitors are calculated
Dragon Metrics looks at the domain of every URL that appears on the search engine result pages (SERPs) for all the keywords in every campaign, and calculates an Organic Visibility Score for each one of these sites. The top 50 sites with the highest Organic Visibility Score for each keyword group and search engine combination are included on the Competitor Discovery report.
Organic Visibility Score is a metric used many places throughout the Dragon Metrics platform. It's roughly analogous to the average expected click-through rate of all keywords in the set. Learn more about how this metric is calculated.
At the top of the page are filters for Keyword Group, Search Engine, and an option to group sites by either root domain or subdomain.
Keyword Group - Competitors in Dragon Metrics are stored in Keyword Group level because by categorize keywords into keyword groups, you can get a different set of competitors for different fields a website might be competing in, and with the Keyword Group selector you can get a list of competitors
Search Engine - Keyword Group in Dragon Metrics can contain one or more tracked search engines and with the Search Engine selector you'll be able to get a different set of competitors in different search engines you've been tracking in the keyword group.
Group by Root Domain or Subdomain - Search engines consider different subdomains as individual domains and will rank them independently, to see which competitors' subdomains you are competing with, you can use this selector.
After you've selected the data you want to view with these selectors, click Apply and the page will be refreshed with a list of competitors within your selected criteria.
